{"id":70,"date":"2022-09-06T19:02:58","date_gmt":"2022-09-06T19:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eatthepoor.com\/?p=70"},"modified":"2022-09-06T19:02:58","modified_gmt":"2022-09-06T19:02:58","slug":"very-poor-relations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/eatthepoor.com\/?p=70","title":{"rendered":"Very Poor Relations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Regular readers of this blog (both of them) know that it\u2019s all about coming to the defense of the underdog\u2014in this case, the guy running for president who comes out and says he\u2019s\u201cnot&nbsp;concerned about the very poor\u201d: Mitt Romney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitt has good reasons not to be concerned! First of all&nbsp;the \u201cvery poor\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miller-mccune.com\/politics\/poorest-americans-dropped-politics-3691\/\">don\u2019t vote<\/a>. That may be because they can\u2019t afford gas to their polling place, or they\u2019re incarcerated for stealing bread or, as sick and elderly poor, they no longer leave their hovels; or they could just be too busy playing Angry Birds on their iPads, but that seems unlikely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the reason for Mitt\u2019s giddy optimism about the non-plight of the extremely poverty stricken: those \u201csafety nets\u201d that are doing such a swell job for the very poor&nbsp;thrashing in them like indigent mackerels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Unemployment Benefits<\/strong> helped keep more than 3 million Americans above the poverty line in 2010. But the GOP both filibustered and voted against extending benefits in <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704104104575622821979663194.html\">2010<\/a>, and again refused to pass them in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2011\/12\/20\/144005474\/yes-means-no-today-for-house-vote-on-payroll-tax-cut\">2011<\/a> before being convinced to by Speaker of the House John Boehner, who threatened to cry in public again.<\/li><li><strong>Social Security<\/strong> has helped keep more than 20 million seniors and disabled Americans <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/44507675\/ns\/business-eye_on_the_economy\/t\/rising-poverty-rate-shows-holes-safety-net\/#.TyrkcZi1nzI\">out of poverty<\/a>. But since some Social Security recipients might not die without the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarp.org\/work\/social-security\/info-07-2010\/maximum_monthly_social_security_benefit.html\">average Social Security<\/a> benefit of just over $1,000 a month, the GOP proposes to \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2012\/01\/10\/us-retirement-meanstesting-idUSTRE8091PT20120110\">means test<\/a>\u201d beneficiaries, just like it does with tax breaks. <em>Wait, no they don\u2019t. <\/em>Disregard.<\/li><li><strong>Medicaid<\/strong> covers nearly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.results.org\/issues\/medicaid\/\">60 million<\/a> low income Americans, nearly half of them children. The GOP would also like to see this means tested, or at least \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/cms\/index.cfm?fa=view&amp;id=3363\">block-granted<\/a>,\u201d which is complicated but just assume it\u2019s like \u201ccock-blocking,\u201d which is something else assholes do.<\/li><li><strong>The Affordable Health Care Act<\/strong> has already helped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbsun.com\/pointofview\/ci_19863712\">insure millions<\/a> of Americans and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/politics\/la-pn-new-health-law-delivers-21-billion-in-medicare-savings-on-drugs-20120202,0,4302021.story?track=rss&amp;utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+latimes%2Fnews%2Fpolitics+%28L.A.+Times+-+Poli\">saved billions<\/a> on Medicare. But as guardians of the most crucial issue of this election year\u2014protecting Americans\u2019 right to remain uninsured\u2014Romney and the other candidates have promised to repeal \u201cObamacare\u201d <em>their first day in office,<\/em> even before jumping up and down in the Lincoln bedroom.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The other tenuous strands in the safety net\u2014Welfare, food stamps, federal subsidies for home heating, funding for health clinics and after school programs\u2014are also targets for elimination, privatization or defunding according to the splintery planks of the GOP platform. After which Romney, presumably, will be \u201cconcerned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing about the very poor: they\u2019ve been very poor <em>for generations<\/em>. For the vast majority of Americans, being born into poverty means staying there; it\u2019s passed, father to son and down again, like a genetic disorder\u2026or the same way the wealthy pass along family jewels, but much less shiny. They probably didn\u2019t lose their jobs under Obama\u2019s lackluster leadership because, since they\u2019re mostly elderly, disabled, or without skills, they haven\u2019t had a job since 1979. Their savings haven\u2019t vanished because they\u2019re not invested in the stock market. Also, they have no savings. Their cars haven\u2019t been repossessed because they\u2019re up on blocks, and their&nbsp;mortgages aren\u2019t \u201cunderwater\u201d because they couldn\u2019t afford a mortgage in the first place. Or water. Rising food prices just means they eat less, and let\u2019s face it: they can stand to lose a few pounds; but at least soaring utility bills aren\u2019t a problem because they\u2019re stealing electricity from the streetlamp where Uncle Fred electrocuted himself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, it makes perfect sense for Mitt&nbsp;not to be concerned with these people because<em>&nbsp;he can\u2019t scare them into voting for him.<\/em>&nbsp;They care less about who\u2019s elected president every four years than the rest of us do about Olympic luging.
